Six decades of colour, devotion and craft — a pioneering woman who gave form to Odisha’s living traditions on canvas.
Born on 18 July 1943 in Khallikote, Ganjam, Basanta Kumari Samanta is celebrated as the first lady artist of Odisha — a pioneer in an art world that had, until then, known no woman painter from the region.
After earning her fine-arts diploma from the Government School of Art and Crafts in 1961, she mastered oil, watercolour, acrylic, textile design and batik, giving form to Odisha’s festivals, deities and everyday life.
For over three decades she served as an art educator, retiring in 2001 after an illustrious career that shaped generations of students. She is also the author of the book Bidipta Basanta.
